Clara Stealey's Diary - January 7, 1910

"January 7 -

Snowed nearly all day. Still got the blues a little. Mama's making my red dress. To-day has almost flown. Went to the show to-night."

I recently re-read a book, Revelations: Diaries of Women, edited by Mary Jane Moffat and Charlotte Painter. The collection includes entries from the diary of a 7 year old Scottish girl, Marjory Fleming, written in the early 1800s. In this excerpt from Marjory's diary, she mentions Isabella - her cousin and tutor - and John - her brother.

"To Day I pronunced a
word which should never
come out of a ladys lips it was
that I called John a Impu-
dent Bitch and Isabella afterwards told
me that I should never say
it even in joke but she kindly
forgave me because I said
that I would not do it again...."

Haven't we all wanted to call our brother an Impudent Bitch at one time or another?
